Description

This module builds on the knowledge gained in years 1 and 2 and is delivered at a more advanced level requiring students to do more independent reading. The Fluid Mechanics part covers the fundamental concept of Navier-Stokes equation, where the students will see how this can be used to solve simple cases and in computational fluid mechanics to solve more complex problems. Tools and concepts used for open-channel flow are covered to give the students a fundamental an understanding of how total energy can be used to characterise, understand and solve a range of open channel flows. The Soil Mechanics part focuses on the application of geotechnical knowledge to real engineering problems e.g. plasticity solutions, earth retaining systems, derivation of parameters from advanced soil testing data.

Learning Outcomes

  • Formulate and solve geotechnical problems using limit analysis approaches
  • Understand and design earth retaining systems, know the difference between various types of retaining walls
  • Understand and interpret some advanced soil tests in order to define characteristic design parameters
  • Understand and apply the Reynolds Averaged Navier–Stokes Equations (RANS) to simple cases
  • Knowledge of how non-dimensional variables can be used to get non-dimensional flow parameters
  • Understand how the concept of total energy can be used to describe open-channel flow
  • Able to characterise open-channel flow
  • Apply Chezy and Manning’s equation to complex problems
  • Ability to apply the specific energy equation for a range of problems
