This course will explore three principal sets of questions in relation to a number of twentieth-century fictional texts which represent grief of different sorts. The first is that of tragedy itself: why are writers drawn to inventing grief? Secondly, what are the implications of fictionalizing a painful experience? Thirdly, while grief, as an intense emotion, is primarily considered an intimate, personal matter, what are the political implications of inscribing it in a public sphere? Using textual analysis informed by psychoanalytical theories of mourning and theories of tragedy, the course will seek to understand what is at stake in fictional mourning.Ìý
