Practically-based analysis of the environmental and social sustainability risk issues affecting private sector natural resource, infrastructure and other capital-intensive projects, primarily but not exclusively in emerging economies. The course will draw substantively on case analysis and aims to contribute to theory building in an area largely under-researched. It will cover a comprehensive review of key drivers for the private sector and provide an understanding of corporate performance and decision making processes and how environmental and social issues are assessed and integrated into core business strategy. It will include analysis of the role of the financial sector and its influence on environmental and social outcomes through investment practices and standards. It includes a review of assessment and management techniques and tools, the global standards framework, environmental and social risk assessment, impact mitigation and metrics. It will include an analysis of how global resource issues such as biodiversity, greenhouse gas emissions and water can be addressed at the project level. The broader institutional context will be addressed through understanding of global standards and the role of key stakeholders such as civil society, multi-lateral agencies, standards institutions and investors. The module will also promote an understanding of the private sector/development nexus and the contribution that environmental and social management at the project level can make.
