Description

The module will introduce you to the use of computerised databases (corpora) in linguistic research, focusing on English language research. To familiarise you with the discipline, it will begin by showing you previous corpus-based studies of English, and will analyse and evaluate the various methodologies used.

The module will cover the following topics: using text retrieval software, designing a corpus, annotating a corpus, using statistics in analysing and evaluating research outcomes, concordancing, collocation, experiment design, the relationship between corpus linguistics and linguistic theory.
