Description
This MA module looks at some key themes in Britain’s post-war history through the lens of decolonisation, covering the period from the beginning of the Second World War to the Falklands War. In this time of rapid political, social, cultural and economic change, the domestic or “metropolitan” world intersected with, and was profoundly shaped by, the loss of Britain’s formal imperial power. Understanding the complexity of this interconnection is the primary aim of the module. The unit is concerned with political history and decisions taken by Labour and Conservative governments during the period, but it takes a broad view of “the political,” exploring links between changes in the imperial and international spheres and domestic political, social and cultural shifts.
