Description
Aims: to provide students with an understanding of the economics of public goods, public expenditure and public services, and with the ability to analyse and understand key issues in this field using standard tools of theoretic and empirical economic analysis, corresponding to the level taught in core second-year economics modules.
Suitable for: 2nd / final year Economics (L100, L101 and L102) and final year Econ/Geog (LL17), Phil/Econ (VL51) and PPE (4V86) students.
Prerequisites: ECON0002: Economics or equivalent. Students should also have taken (or be concurrently taking) ECON0013: Microeconomics or equivalent.
Assumed knowledge: Students coming into the module should understand concepts relating to Pareto efficiency, welfare distribution and market failures. They should be familiar with algebraic derivation and graphical representation of utility as well as profit maximisation, in perfect competition. They also should be able to frame economic decisions in the presence of asymmetric information.
