This module is not available to distance learning students since it is studio based. This is a flipped learning module, i.e., the lectures are video recorded and class time is used to work through activities that build on this content.
The module cannot be taken flexibly, and students are expected to have engaged with the content prior to each seminar. Additionally, students will work together in teams throughout the term to create weekly assignments and presentations.
This module is not available to students outside of the programme (MA Education and Technology). For students on MA Digital Media: Critical Studies/Education or Production you must submit a short statement about why you want to join the module and how your background relates to the subject. This should be sent to ioe.ma.edtech@ucl.ac.uk

This module will examine how design thinking underpins the development of digital technology designed to foster new learning opportunities. The module is contextualised to environmental sustainability which is a critical area for education and one that is under-theorised in the field of digital learning.
During the four first weeks of the module, our students are introduced to underpinning concepts to design and environmental sustainability with each week dedicated to a relevant topic e.g., how do we involve users as partners in co-design? The second part of the module builds on this foundation. Students follow a design process starting from identifying a meaningful problem, developing a design concept, all the way to digital prototyping.
Students carry out project-based design work during which they craft their own design questions and devise design methods, toward developing a digital prototype that fosters new learning experiences for environmental sustainability.
