Description

This module is an introduction to deaf people, deaf culture and sign languages. We will be discussing deafness and sign language from a sociocultural perspective, and explore various deaf identities including how these identities interact with other identities (gender, race, sexuality etc.) We will delve into the history of deaf people, sign language and deaf education, and discuss the oppression of deaf people and how deaf people have fought against this. Parallels with other language minorities and disabled groups will be covered.

The module is delivered via 10 weekly 2-hour lectures, delivered in person. In some sessions, various deaf guests will join remotely for a 15-minute Q&A session.

Module Aims

  • To explore deaf culture and what this means to deaf people
  • To understand the importance ofÌý identity and how this is formed
  • To learn that identiy is complex and that there are many layers to one's identity (intersectionality)
  • To understand deafness and sign language from a sociocutural perspective, as opposed to the medical perspective (positive v.s. deficit model)
  • To apply your knowledge and understanding of deaf people as a cultural, linguistic and disabled minority to other minority groups
