Description

This module will introduce you to key concepts, sources of information and debates in global health. We place special emphasis on the social and structural determinants of determinants of health, i.e. the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age, and the underlying social, economic and political mechanisms that generate inequalities. We also explore the history and roles of key global health actors and the fight against ongoing coloniality in global health and development.Ìý

By the end of this module you should be able to:Ìý

  • Know and use commonly used terms and indicators in global healthÌý

  • Identify major causes of global morbidity and mortalityÌý

  • Understand the underlying determinants of those causes, including their social and structural determinantsÌý

  • Discuss the relationship between social justice and the quest for global healthÌý

  • Understand current debates in key areas of global health, including communicable and non-communicable diseases, mental health, as well as maternal, child and adolescent healthÌý

  • Understand the basics of development and poverty reduction in a global contextÌý

  • Critique the role of targets such as the Millennium Development Goals and the Sustainable Development Goals in driving the global health and development agendaÌý

  • Know where to find information and how to use it correctlyÌý

  • Understand the importance of evidence in global healthÌý

  • Start to apply critical thinking while synthesising evidenceÌý

  • Write a coherent, correctly referenced essayÌý

  • Understand current debates in key areas of global health, including communicable and non-communicable diseases, mental health, ability, disability and ableism, as well as maternal, child and adolescent healthÌý

The module is compulsory for students on the MSc/PG Dip Global Health and Development and is optional for students on the MSc Paediatric and Child Health (Global Child Health) and MSc Health Economics and Decision Science. The module is also open to any UCL MSc/PG Dip students, Taster course students and Short course students subject to availability.Ìý

You will have lectures, seminars, assignments and self-study. Moodle will be used as an information portal for you and a source for reading materials.Ìý
