Description

This module develops the use of the computer as a central tool in many aspects of production in the arts, culture and the built environment. More than simply a set of tools, computer-aided drawing, modelling and information exchange comprise an invaluable medium of expression whose use has transformed the practice of design. The useful exploitation of this medium demands not only the acquisition of skills, but also a critical consideration of the design process, creative practice and the capabilities of emerging technologies.

After taking this module you should obtain computing and modelling skills associated with an agreed and relevant design project. You will also gain an understanding of the role and use of computers in creative practice and acquire the skills which are central to the process of computer-related design, representation and fabrication.

The course is delivered through a combination of skills-based taught sessions and teaching related to the design project. A specific tutor is responsible for the module group for the entire year. The tutor will thus be responsible for approximately 20 students. They will provide general direction through tutorials as well as teaching the mandatory elements of the module. The skills sessions will take place in the first term, providing foundational skills useful to both the design project and wider studies. The second term will focus on the design project, with submission and assessment in the third term. College-based practical workshops will take place during the first term each week for around two hours. These will deliver key skills in two- and three-dimensional drawing, imaging and visualisation. Further sessions in the second term and the beginning of the third term will provide skills and teaching to complement the design project.

Computing for Design and Creative Practices is usually undertaken in the second year of the undergraduate Architecture Programme.
