Description
This module is compulsory for students studying the MSc Periodontology (distance learning) programme.
The contents of this module will include (but are not limited to):
- The impact of patient’s medical history, systemic and local risk factors on periodontal health and proposed management strategies (e.g. diabetic control HbA1C, medications)
- The potential impact of periodontal management upon a patient’s medical health (e.g. renal patients, patients with cardiac complications, etc.)
- Prevalence, aetiology, presentation, screening/assessment and management (or avenues for referral) of other oral conditions including oral cancer, candidiasis, lichen planus, ulcerations, xerostomia, halitosis and other non-periodontal, non-hard tissue oral conditions
- Clinical Governance including audit, safeguarding, medical emergencies, radiographic safety and the legal framework in relation to working with complimentary professionals
On successful completion of the module, graduates will have achieved a foundation in the understanding and clinical management of:
- The patient presenting with a complex medical history, systemic and local risk factors affecting periodontal health and management strategies
- The potential impact of periodontal management upon a patient’s medical health (e.g. renal patients, patients with cardiac complications, etc.)
- Other oral conditions including oral cancer, candidiasis, lichen planus, ulcerations, xerostomia, halitosis and other non-periodontal, non-hard tissue oral conditions
- Clinical Governance including audit, safeguarding, radiographic safety and the legal framework in relation to working with complimentary professionals
- Clinical situations that require intervention or appropriate referral
- Common medical and dental emergencies including any arising from treatment complications
