Description
The dissertation requires students to carry out independent research under supervision. It is an opportunity to identify a research question, generate hypotheses and identify appropriate methods, collect and analyse data, report the work in an article format with 10-12,000 max words. Students can choose a supervisor and a topic from a list. The topic can be in any area of Cognitive and Decision Sciences broadly defined. Supervisor will advise in the following areas: Choice of topic and methods Access to relevant sources Thesis plan Scholarly presentation of ideas The dissertation a substantial part of the course and will contribute 30% of the final mark. The research is typically conducted at the end of term 2 and during term 3, after you have been familiarized with domains, concepts and methods in cognitive and decision sciences. During term 3 there is no timetabled teaching. Students are responsible for arranging supervision of their main project. The projects can be carried out at institutions outside the division, and/or with external supervision, but only with the agreement of the Course Director. When the main supervisor is external to the division, students must also have an internal supervisor, and students are responsible for arranging this. The main project represents one third of the total marks for the MSc. Part-time students complete their project in their second and final year.
