Description

Module summary: This module introduces the main fundamentals of building acoustics and sound, within the context of designing/operating buildings for optimising health, comfort and wellbeing. It addresses factors such as: fundamentals of sound, building and room acoustics; noise control and sound design (building design/operational strategies); monitoring and modelling approaches; case studies and regulation.

Module learning outcomes: On completion of this module you will understand how the many and varied principles of acoustics are applied in the design of buildings and in the public realm. This will include the glamorous side of acoustics, desirable sound in concert halls, auditoria and performance spaces. This will also include the essential assessment of noise, and undesirable sound. Noise can have potentially significant effects on the health and wellbeing of building occupants. Following completion of the course you will understand how all building types can be designed to protect and minimise these potentially negative effects.
