Description
This module is designed to give students with a varied range of backgrounds core notions of anatomy and physiology, and for all to learn, through the critical analysis of case studies, the impact of rehabilitative or assistive technologies on patients. The course is divided in two parts: Anatomy and Physiology, and Applications of Rehabilitation Engineering.
ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY (A&P)
This part will equip students with basic knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology. We consider this important in our MSc as to design good assistive technologies or rehabilitation devices, the engineers should understand the condition of the people they seek to help. After taking this first part, students will be able to describe key A&P concepts, using appropriate vocabulary. This knowledge is essential to be able to understand the case studies discussed in the course’s second part.
APPLICATIONS OF REHABILITATION ENGINEERING
This part has two aims:
(1) To educate students as to the potential impact of Assistive Technologies and Rehabilitation Devices on patients, their carers, family, friends, and NHS staff. The lectures are given by lecturers and clinical collaborators.
(2) To train students to critically appraise interventions using though the evaluation of published Case Studies and Case Reports focused on the use of an assistive or rehabilitative device.
