Description

This module teaches a key skill for heritage scientists: how to design and conduct an experiment. Heritage Science is an eminently multidisciplinary domain relying on a number of applied sciences and instrumental methods. In this module, you will learn how to select the most suitable analytical strategy for a given heritage problem. Different objects, techniques and purposes will be discussed to train your experimental skills in preventive conservation, conservation science, technical art history and archaeological science scenarios. To narrow down the selection of instrumental methods, the module will be aligned with the topic of your dissertation. You will justify your research plan using relevant literature, while you record the experiment in a lab book, and evaluate the results statistically and in relation to the intended aims. The module is organised around an experiment you design around an object/material, a technique, or a purpose you will be exploring during supervised training sessions at the Heritage Science Labs. Fieldwork in combination with computer-based research is also possible with the agreement of the module lead.
