Description
This module aims to develop post-BA advanced skills in comprehension and the active use of written and spoken Russian for professional and academic purposes. The module will concentrate on contemporary Russia – politics, society, and culture with materials drawn mainly from newspapers, journals and other media sources as well as scholarly research and publications. The advanced skills developed in the module include, amongst other things: oral presentation and argument, the ability to conduct a discussion in Russian, conveying information and argument in clear and coherent written Russian, extracting information from spoken and written sources, practice in transcribing and preparing subtitles of Russian films as well as the translation of various texts into English.
The module requires BA 1st class level in Russian language or equivalent and places on the module are limited. A compulsory two-hour test of comprehension and written Russian, as well as a translation exercise from Russian into English, is held during induction week to ensure that students are allocated into the most appropriate stream of Russian language.
