Description

Content:This module aims to address important issues in bilingualism and second language acquisition. In this module, we will introduce key concepts, theoretical approaches, research methods and empirical findings of bilingualism and second language acquisition. We will cover the cognitive mechanisms underlying language use in bilinguals and the cognitive consequences of bilingualism. We will also discuss the influences of various factors, including affective factors (e.g., motivation) and social factors (e.g., home literacy environment) on language learning in bilinguals.

Teaching Delivery: This module is taught in 10 weekly lectures

- Bilingualism and cognitive functioning

- Affective aspects in language learning

- Code-switching and language choice

- Personality and thinking in bilinguals

Module Aims: The module aims:

1) To provide an introduction to key concepts of and theoretical approaches to bilingualism and second language acquisition.

2) To familiarize students with a variety of research methods employed to examine bilingualism and second language acquisition.

3)To understand cognitive mechanisms underlying language processing in bilinguals.

4) To examine how various factors influence language learning in bilinguals.

5) To explore effective ways to enhance language learning in bilinguals.
