Description
The aim of this course is to introduce engineering students to the materials, methodology and applications for the topic known as ‘nanotechnology’, that is the application of nanometre scale material and devices for Engineering.
Upon completion of this module students should be able to:
- Understand materials at the nanoscale.
- Appreciate nanotechnology in nature.
- Acquire an insight into nanoscale devices for electronic, photonic, magnetic, mechanical, chemical and biological uses.
- Be familiar with differing methodologies for building nanoscale devices;
- Understand issues associated with scaling and the needs of manufacturing with regard to nanoscale materials and devices in all fields of Engineering
- Consider different methods and techniques for characterising nanomaterials and nanoscale devices
- Consider key future nanotechnology enabled technologies
- Understand the impact of nanoparticles on the environment and human and other species health
- Consider the negative impact of nanotechnology on climate change plus positive methods for climate control through the application of nanotechnology
- The impact of nanotechnology through the consideration of an annually variable Engineering case study
- Practically use scanning probe methods to visualise the nanoscale
