Description
This module offers a critical perspective on the relationship between environment and development through the lens of ‘political ecology’. The focus is on the dynamics of socio-environmental change brought about by complex and contradictory development processes in Latin America. It provides an introduction to ‘political ecology’ as a field of enquiry and activism, emphasising the potential synergies between the anglophone and Latin American political ecology traditions. The module then uses this lens to analyse the material, political, and ideological dimensions of key development themes including extractivism, agribusiness expansion, land disputes, environmental conservation, climate justice, agrarian social movements, and urbanization. It explores these analytical themes theoretically and through emblematic case studies in different parts of Latin America.
