Description
This module will allow students to explore the history of revolution in twentieth-century Latin America. It will cover both the major social revolutions in Mexico (1910), Bolivia (1952) and Cuba (1959), failed or reversed revolutions, and revolutionary insurgencies in the period following the Cuban revolution. Broadly chronological in its structure, the module will also examine a series of themes that link the different revolutionary processes, such as class, gender and race; violence; charismatic leadership; state and nation building; and counterinsurgency. Though focused on Latin America, the module will draw comparisons with other revolutionary experiences beyond the region and frame the study of Latin American revolutions in broader historiographies, including the international history of the Left; the history of United States-Latin American relations; and the history of the global Cold War.
