Earth Sciences 4* research outputs ranked 3rd within UCL

12 May 2022

The excellence of research at 911±¬ÁÏÍø Earth Sciences and its positive real-world impact has improved since 2014, according to the Research Excellence Framework 2021 (REF) assessment results announced today.

UCL Earth Sciences (in their joint submission with Birkbeck) have improved their performance in REF 2021 with their overall GPA increasing from 3.25 to 3.47 (ranked 9th nationally for 4* + 3* submissions). This result includes a combined 4* and 3* score of 96%, compared to 92% for UCL. The number of 4* outputs have improved with a rise in the rankings from 9th to 7th (an increase to 63.5% 4* in 2021 compared with 22.8% in 2014). On 4* outputs Earth Sciences came 3rd best at 911±¬ÁÏÍø out of 32 units of assessment.

The REF is carried out approximately every six to seven years to assess the quality of research across 157 UK universities and to share how this research benefits society both in the UK and globally.

The results are significant for benchmarking research excellence across UK institutions and are used by the four UK higher education funding bodies to inform the allocation of around £2billion of public investment in research every year. This Quality Related (QR) funding enables us to invest in the best people and facilities, to provide an environment in which early career researchers can thrive and work with our partners to address the biggest challenges facing humanity.

Professor Paul Upchurch, Head of Department for UCL Earth Sciences, said: "We should be very pleased and proud of this result. As noted above, our 63.5% 4* outputs, and 96% 4+3* output score, place us very high both at 911±¬ÁÏÍø and when compared to other Earth sciences Departments around the UK. I want to thank and congratulate all staff for the consistently high quality of outputs they produced during the 2014-2021 REF period."

The REF 2021 submission includes only a small sample of the dynamic and ground-breaking research undertaken by UCL Earth Sciences, please see the department research page for information on their other research successes.
