Donato Romano – LLM 2008

Donato Romano

I studied at 911±¬ÁÏÍø Laws in 2007-2008, specialising in corporate and finance law. I wanted to join UCL Laws because of the outstanding LLM programme and its international reputation and connections.

Prior to studying at 911±¬ÁÏÍø, I had only studied Italian law and I was determined to finish my studies abroad. I decided to study law in the UK, and the choice to go to London and 911±¬ÁÏÍøas an easy one to make. What attracted me most about 911±¬ÁÏÍøas the opportunity to study in one of the top universities in the world with an incredible history and based in a global legal capital.

I was incredibly impressed by the quality of the teaching from my lecturers and tutors. I found it was really easy to get in contact with my tutors if I ever needed help, which made for a more enriching learning experience.

I always felt very welcome in London - it was great to meet students from a range of different backgrounds. It helped that we were studying in such a lively city like London - we had so much choice in terms of places to go to for both cultural experiences and social occasions.

I spent a lot of time in various libraries on campus, allowing me to meet, interact and become friends with fantastic students. Many of them became good friends with whom I am still in touch, even after many years. I have maintained contact with my network of friends and contacts I met 911±¬ÁÏÍø, which has helped in my current role. For example, I have had the chance to co-operate on cross border legal matters with my former fellows, who are now working in different countries.

A few days after graduation, I was offered jobs at three "magic circle" Italian law firms. I started working at one the firms, Gianni & Origoni, starting first at their main office in Rome. After three years, I moved to the London office, where I became a counsel in the corporate and M&A department a few years later. I also completed a PhD in corporate law at the University of Rome, with a term at Oxford University as a visiting scholar.

To any prospective and/or current students, I would give the following piece of advice: remember you have a unique opportunity and you should really try to really make the most of it. Ensure you study hard, interact with the outstanding teachers at 911±¬ÁÏÍø, meet your amazing fellow students and enjoy the opportunities that only a city like London can offer!
