Medical Dutch is听an听online Dutch language course听aimed at health professionals.听The course听is for intermediate language learners and is delivered via online course materials supported by听12 one-hour听one-to-one听lessons. The course is developed and taught by听highly qualified and experienced UCL Centre for Languages and International Education tutors.鈥疞essons are听via Zoom or MS Teams and can be scheduled depending on a learner's individual needs.听

Prerequisite for entry听
Medical Dutch is suitable for students that have successfully completed the online Dutch courses听Intermediate 1鈥痮谤鈥�Intermediate 2, or who have reached a similar linguistic standard, equivalent to level B1 / B1+ as defined by the Council of Europe. If you are not sure听regarding your level, please email one of the course tutors, 顿谤听础苍听
Course duration听
The course runs over a 12-week period from your chosen starting date.听听
Aims and objectives听
On successful completion of the course,鈥痽ou will have a鈥痯ost-intermediate level of proficiency in Dutch (level B2/B2+ CEFR) which will enable you to:听听
communicate both orally and in writing in a wide range of听medical听contexts and situations.听
understand,听assess听and discuss scientific, medical or clinical texts and cases.听
have effective Dutch academic writing and communication skills that will help you advance in the medical profession or help with your degree course.听

Course content听
Medical Dutch is built around a series of thematic chapters. In the first chapters the focus is on the different parts of the human body - from digestion and respiration to the reproductive system - and related illnesses and diseases. The next two themes are devoted to medicine, therapies, and treatments. The last topics are medical equipment and instruments. The content and online activities are designed to develop the four language skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing in a scientific,听medical听and clinical context. Each chapter is structured in the same way and includes the following activities and exercises:听
Reading and Listening skills听- you analyse a scientific publication or online documentary by completing a series of exercises and tasks aimed at developing your understanding, assessment, and medical reasoning of scientific and medical contexts and situations.听
Writing skills听- you write two short essays in answer to a set of research questions in which you summarise, evaluate, and discuss scientific or medical cases and situations.听
Speaking skills听- you participate in weekly one-hour听one-to-one听online lessons with your tutor. In each lesson you focus on:听role play aimed at understanding, communicating and interacting in medical or听scientific contexts;听presenting and debating medical, clinical or scientific topics.
The course also provides a range of resources such as specific glossaries and thematic word explanations.听
Course Delivery
Medical Dutch is delivered via an online learning environment (Moodle). All course materials can be downloaded for offline use. After you complete the course, you continue to have access to the online course materials. The course includes听12 weekly one-hour听one-to-one听lessons听via Zoom or MS Teams. Note that these sessions do not take place at a set time. You decide with your tutor for each individual lesson on a day and time that听suits you听both.听In exceptional circumstance, a short extension may be agreed with your tutor.听
You need internet access and a computer (desktop,听laptop听or tablet) and webcam.听
