Beyond the 5G Launch: The Future of Personal Communications and Digital Infrastructure

Professor Tim Whitley, Managing Director Applied Research, BT,听provides the Honorary Chair's opening Keynote

The latest generation of mobile networks (5G) has launched offering entirely new capabilities. 5G is at the start of its journey and, based on previous experience, will be with us for 20 years. Over that time applications will evolve that will quite simply transform the way we live our lives, run our businesses and operate our economy. Over this time the underlying network will inevitably evolve too. In this talk, Tim will discuss the service requirements, with examples use-cases, that will drive increasingly demanding network requirements for the solutions that we believe will drive opportunity for applications providers, network operators, the ecosystem of equipment vendors but above all customers. BT's perspective on the promising areas of research for the evolution of 5G will be highlighted, always remembering that our imperfect ability to forecast consumer trends in the far future points to a need for increased convergence, simplicity, personalisation and flexibility.

Tim Whitley

Managing Director Applied Research, BT

Professor Timothy Whitley is a BT Distinguished Engineer and serves as MD Applied Research for BT and MD of BT鈥檚 Technology Campus 鈥楢dastral Park鈥� in Suffolk, England. He is accountable for all aspects of BT鈥檚 Global Research activities, which includes applied research, technology and partnerships with world leading universities.

From 2007 to 2011 he was BT Group Strategy Director. Tim holds a BSc in Physics and a PhD in Optical Fibre Systems. Tim is a Board member for the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership and a BT visiting Professor with the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering at the University of Essex.

In December 2016, Professor Whitley was appointed as a member of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) by the UK Government.
In February 2018 Tim was admitted as BT's William Pitt Fellow at Pembroke College Cambridge.

Tim joined BT in 1981 as a Telephone Engineering apprentice in North Wales and has held roles in Research, Technical Architecture, Strategic Analysis and Corporate Strategy.
