Front of pack nutritional labelling schemes

This project will conduct a high-quality systematic review of front-of-pack labelling to update the Cochrane review.

30 October 2019

Background

Front-of-pack labelling provides clearly visible nutritional information about food products and is one approach to improving dietary quality. Labelling appears to improve knowledge and encourage reformulation but less is known about how it influences behaviour.

A recent Cochrane review found limited and inconsistent evidence that it changes behaviour.

Aims and methodology

We conducted a high-quality systematic review, which aimed to update the Cochrane review, with a focus on pre-packaged foods, examining the impact of FOPL on objectively measured purchasing and consumption.

A number of new studies were identified and these appear to support labelling as a strategy to support dietary change.
