Hannah M. B. Gibbs

The ExCiteS team consists of a core group of academics, research staff and PhD students alongside affiliated staff and alumni, who make invaluable contributions to our projects.

Hannah's work explores the contribution that culturally appropriate digital technologies can make to supporting communities to address local issues which matter to them.

She is currently researching the use of story-trekking and innovative technological approaches in co-collaborative recording and management of Indigenous or local cultural landscapes threatened by climate change. This work aims to evaluate how community-led projects can strike a beneficial balance between local communities, specialists, and environments.

With the Extreme Citizen Science research group Hannah supports the development of image-based geographic analysis and visualisation tools () and investigates how Higher Education Institutions can work together with citizens to shape better societies (). Hannah also works with organisations in the public sector, social enterprises, and charities, and coordinates the zoo archaeological analysis at the innovative community-based archaeological project SHARP.

Research interests focus on broadening what is considered “specialist” knowledge in landscape management, including the validation of Indigenous and community epistemologies and ontologies. Key interests include: community-directed research; Indigenous sovereignty; cultural routes and landscapes; traditional ecological knowledge; and the social significance of environments and the relationships between these places, biota, and people.
