UCL IEDE Senior Research Associate wins CIBSE Napier Shaw Bronze Medal

The CIBSE Napier Shaw Bronze medal is awarded for the most highly rated paper published in BSER&T in the year, relating to research.

Indoor Air Quality

This year, UCL IEDE Senior Research Associate Jonathon Taylor's paper on聽Understanding and mitigating overheating and indoor PM2.5 risks using coupled temperature and indoor air quality models聽has been selected as the winner of this prize. Congratulations to Jonathon and his co-authors, Anna Mavrogianni, Mike Davies, Payel Das, Clive Shrubsole, Phil Biddulph and Eleni聽Oikonomou.

The paper describes the results of a coupled indoor temperature and air pollution model. The model is used to demonstrate, in a set of dwellings representative of the English housing stock, how occupant exposure to heat and air pollution might change in the future due to:

  • climate change-driven increases in outdoor temperature
  • improvements in the energy efficiency of buildings
  • changes in occupant ventilation behaviour to mitigate high indoor temperatures.

The work forms the basis of the AWESOME and Health Protection Research Unit (HPRU) projects, which aim to estimate heat and air pollution exposure for the spatially-varying English housing stock for use in epidemiological modelling, as well as allowing policymakers to rapidly estimate health and energy consequences now and in the future under different energy efficiency and housing adaptation scenarios.

The award will be presented at the CIBSE President鈥檚 Awards dinner, which this year is to be held on Friday 14th October at the Institution of Civil Engineers.
