Consultancy

We will provide innovative, cutting-edge insights into sustainability, energy and buildings that comes with a long track record of multidisciplinary thinking. In the past, we have worked on grants with EDF; advised the UN and national governments on climate change policy; frequently provided BEIS with expertise on energy efficiency; completed anÌýevaluation of Calix with Ipsos Mori; provided low-carbon shipping solutions for the International Maritime Organisation and many others. We are currently developing our portfolio of open short courses. We would like to hear from you about your training needs – contact us to discuss your requirements and what we can offer.

Some of the courses we are likely to offer soon are in the sustainable business field: Green Finance and Measurement of Sustainability. They are aimed at senior and mid-career professionals in organisations and businesses looking to develop their strategies for long-term value creation and sustainable pathways.Ìý

Moisture in Buildings CPD: the renowned UK Centre for Moisture in Buildings hosts a CPD programme for professionals in the buildings- and construction sectors. Inappropriate moisture levels in buildings are considered to be the cause of the majority of all building failures including building-related occupant health problems. Available online and face-to-face.

Bespoke short courses and training

We can deliver custom education and CPD for executives, business leaders and high-potential professionals in organisations that are looking to drive innovation and generate impact. We will work with you to design a programme built around your training requirements, and transfer our knowledge and insights in a way that will deliver impact in your organisation. Training could be modelled around sustainable and circular businesses, climate change challenges, energy efficiency, building physics, modelling, scenario planning, technical environmental design and engineering challenges and many more.

PhD studentshipsÌý

Our doctoral training and research outputs are world leading. We endeavour to closely align our PhD research with real-world needs and are always looking for suitable industry partners. Browse the range of research areas or speak to us about a particular question your organisation wants to explore through academic research.Ìý

The PhD student will work closely with your business and may spend time in your office as work experience - models of collaboration can be tailored to your requirements. Some PhDs study part time and work 50% of the time with the sponsor, others only visit their sponsor occasionally.

To fully sponsor a UK/EU student over 3 years the fees + stipend are around £75,000. A lower level payment is possible via a CASE award (where UKRI pays a share) or via our doctoral training centre in (around £8,000 p.a. over 4 years).Ìý

Knowledge Transfer Partnership

You can improve your business' competitiveness and productivity through funded partnerships with one of our academics and/or graduates. Ìý

The scheme can last between 12 and 36 months, depending on what the project is and the needs of the business.
A KTP is part-funded by a grant. You will need to contribute to the salary of the Associate who will work with your business, plus the cost of a supervisor who will oversee the scheme.ÌýFind out more on

Case Study:ÌýIndustry collaboration in PhD research

Our centre for doctoral training for Energy Resilience and the Built Environment explores the interaction of people, buildings and energy systems and new relationships between energy supply and demand.Ìý

We need and want to work with likeminded partners from industry to address the challenges of the sector: how can we ensure a decarbonised system to buy, sell and store heat and power whilst meeting our human need for high quality spaces in which we live and work, increasing the productivity of the UK economy, reducing fuel poverty, improving health and wellbeing, and supporting an ageing population?Ìý

See below how our current cohorts are working with partners in industry:

ERBE Cohort 3Ìý

  • is working with , a ventilation products manufacturer, to investigate ventilation solutions for the domestic environment. Her project focuses on the interactive performance of passive pressure-controlled background ventilators when paired with mechanical extract ventilation systems.
  • is working with to develop sustainable digital twins in the built environment. This will be achieved by developing a framework that assesses the costs and benefits of digital twins with respect to their business case and carbon emissions. The framework is implemented in case studies across Arup and UCL buildings.
  • is working with (BEIS), to understand the impact of increased overheating in homes due to climate change. Her research takes a systems approach to consider the risks that government must manage, and potential opportunities as we transition to dealing with warmer weather.

ERBE Cohort 2

  • is working with (FCBS) to develop a framework for the design of high performance, net-zero whole life carbon buildings.

ERBE Cohort 1

  • is working with the smart energy software solutions company PassivSystems on two very different research projects: pricing flexibility in emerging and future energy systems and comfort and control of low-carbon heating, from a social sciences perspective.
  • is looking at university buildings and campuses in the context of climate change with the architectural practice (FCBS). , a software company.
  • will be simulating and optimising the performance of the building stock together.
  • The fifth research project concerns moisture and ventilation in dwellings and will be undertaken by our student in conjunction with , a company that develops innovative ventilation solutions for residential and office buildings.
