Year Out Programme is a period of work experience taken by architecture students after completing their undergraduate Part 1 degree and before commencing their Part 2 postgraduate studies.

The Bartlett provides a twelve-month part-time course to support you whilst working in practice. It offers one-to-one career development advice and peer-to-peer support, as well as access to recall events, networking opportunities as well as keeping you in touch with everything happening at The Bartlett.Ìý
The Beyond Bartlett Year Out Programme forms part of the minimum 7 years' education and experience required, including Part 3, leading to registration as an architect with the ARB and chartered status with the RIBA.Ìý
Work experienceÌý
The programme is designed to complement students’ first experience of practice, providing early career support and a connection to The Bartlett and its network of leading practitioners and other professionals.ÌýÌýÌý
Course structureÌý
The course consists of:Ìý
- Four to six early evening recall events, including networking, peer-to-peer support, talks and potential practice visitsÌý
- Supervision of four Professional Education and Development Records (PEDR) quarterly record sheets, documenting students’ work experience, signed-off by the Bartlett Professional Studies AdvisorÌý
- Year Out Symposium – Opportunity for registrants to provide a critical reflection of their experience of practice, building on their approach as a practitionerÌý
- Bartlett events – invitations to lectures, exhibition openings and alumni eventsÌý
- Access to a Professional Studies Advisor who can offer one-to-one advice and support during the yearÌý
The Beyond Bartlett Year Out Certificate is awarded on completion of four PEDRs, attendance at the Year Out Symposium and a number of Year Out Recalls and Events.ÌýÌý
PEDR Quarterly RecordsÌý
As a post-Part 1 student you need to register with the RIBA to use the . In order to complete the PEDR you must be registered with a School of Architecture.ÌýÌý
PEDRs record your work experience over a three month period and are completed in collaboration with your practice mentor/supervisor. They are submitted to the Professional Studies Advisor (PSA) for comment and signing. You can also complete your Year Out in an associated, approved field including planning, construction, development, landscape or placemaking.Ìý

Applicants should note that The Beyond Bartlett Year Out course is a professional course, not an academic programme, and does not confer UCL student status.Ìý
Fees
Once employment has been secured, the Stage 1 2023-24 fee of £300 can be paid via the . An additional fee of £75 will need to be paid for each quarterly PEDR signed beyond the 4 sheets outlined above, or retrospectively.Ìý
