The architectural studio of Bartlett alumna, Freja Bao (Architecture MArch, 2017), has been named one of 20 emerging architectural practices by Wallpaper*, the global design magazine.

The Wallpaper* Architects’ Directory is an annual listing of innovative and promising new architectural practices from around the world. It was established in 2000 as an international index of emerging architectural talent.

Tsing-Tien Making

After completing her studies at The Bartlett, Freja worked at KPF Architects in London and then joined the Tokyo office of Kengo Kuma and Associates. In 2023, she returned to China to set up Tsing-Tien Making (TTM), a studio offering services in architectural design, renovation, art curation and product design. Rooted in tradition, Freja’s studio draws inspiration from historical contexts to create resonant and contemporary designs.

TTM recently completed the renovation of No. 38 Jinfan Road, Suzhou – the former residence of Chinese philosopher Zhang Taiyan (1869–1936). The residence, also known as Zhang Garden, was closed for decades following Zhang Taiyan’s death, and reopened in 2023 as a public museum and cultural hub for the community in Suzhou.

The residence comprises three buildings and is surrounded by a green walled garden. As part of the renovation, TTM designed dedicated exhibition spaces within the house to showcase Zhang Taiyan’s contributions to literature and history. The building also features a Gu Wu Xuan bookstore and library to enrich the local community.
