Profile

Thérèse Kearns has a strong reputation for her research on ancient technologies, particularly metallurgy and more recently building construction, using archaeological data to develop experimental approaches.Ìý This has included publications and work for English Heritage, but is most significant in her current position as the archaeologist at Butser Ancient Farm.Ìý At Butser she is facilitating high profile research projects, teaching (from junior school to university students), public engagement and media.

The UCL, Institute of Archaeology signed a partnership with Butser Ancient Farm in 2019 to develop a long-term partnership.Ìý Butser is the location of our annual Experimental Archaeology Course (Archaeo-Tech) attended by all our 1st year students, it also hosts various student experimental projects (undergraduate, masters and PhD), we have ongoing research (e.g. on Roman pottery kilns with Prof. Bill Sillar) and are in the process of setting up further research projects based on Palaeolithic and Bronze Age sites.

All of this collaboration is facilitated by Thérèse who assists with logistics, advises on experimental activities and teaches our students on site.
