About the Magpie Project

The Magpie Project is a registered charity dedicated to supporting mothers and children who are living in temporary or insecure accommodation in Newham. We provide a safe, welcoming space where families can access vital services, receive guidance, and find community support. Our mission is to ensure that all children have the right to a secure, safe place to play, healthy food, informed and engaged parents, and access to necessary support, regardless of their family’s circumstances. Through our work, we aim to make a tangible difference in the lives of marginalised families.Ìý

Role description

This role will primarly involve shadowing and supporting CAJ Director, Rachel Knowles, as she delivers a weekly outreach session at the Magpie Project. The outreach session primarily involves triaging cases and supporting women to get help, particularly with problems relating to housing, community care, and education law. The volunteer would be responsible for taking notes during meetings and supporting Rachel with any follow up work that has been agreed.Ìý

In addition to your role-specific training, all students volunteering on a CAJ pro bono placement undertake mandatory training which covers the following:ÌýÌý

Your participation will help you document and showcase the valuable competencies you've developed, however, please note that participation in the PBSDF scheme is entirely voluntary and will not affect your placement in any way.Ìý

Eligibility

Due to the nature of this role and our partner organisation, this role is only open to LLB and LLM students who identify as women.Ìý

We are looking for volunteers who can demonstrate:

• Attention to detail
• High level of written englishÌý
• A knowledge of how to navigate online and paper forms, or the confidence to learn.Ìý
• A commitment to or an awareness of social justice issues;
• Reliability and commitment, good interpersonal and communication skills, including written and oral;
• Strong administrative skills.

Time Committments

The selected student must be available on Tuesdays from 12-3pm during the Outreach session at the Magpie Project Offices in West Ham. Outreach sessions only take place when appointments are scheduled so this may not be every Tuesday. Your supervisor will let you know when an appointment has been confirmed. The selected student will also need to be available to support with follow up work following the appointments at 911±¬ÁÏÍø iLAC. This will generally take place immediately after the session or next day so please factor this in when determining your availablilty for this role.Ìý

The selected student will also need to attend mandatory training on 30 October from 2-5pm at 911±¬ÁÏÍø iLAC in Stratford.Ìý
