Get Involved: UCL Student Pro Bono Committee

Overview

The UCL Student Pro Bono Committee are a group of UCL Laws students who assist the CAJ in all aspects of their mission to promote access to justice and involve students in pro bono. Every year, the SPBC hosts the annualÌý.ÌýThe committee also runs an annualÌýPublic Interest Careers Mentorship Scheme, and anÌý.Ìý

In previous years, the Committee has hostedÌýpanel events on topics includingÌý,Ìýhomelessness, theÌýhostile environment for migrants,Ìý,Ìýand more.ÌýThey have also organised several successful fundraisers including a bake sale for the Climate Justice Fund the London Legal Support Trust, the British Red Cross, and the UCL Integrated Legal Advice Clinic.Ìý

Each committee receives significant logistical and advisory support from CAJ to achieve their aims and objectives for the year. As such, gettingÌýinvolved with the committee represents an exciting opportunity for students to get involved with promoting pro bono and access to justice issues both to audiences within and outside of the UCL student body.

Executive Chair

Ìý

  • Oversees the SPBC and leads meetings, liaising with all committee members to arrange an appropriate meeting timeÌý
  • Plans the Introduction to Pro Bono Talk and the Pro Bono Fair with the SLS Pro Bono Officer and CAJ StaffÌýÌý
  • Liaise separately with each officer throughout the week to ensure that they are on schedule and ensuring the delivery of the Committee’s activitiesÌý
Careers Officer

Ìý

  • Plans panels, talks, and/or workshops to provide guidance to students on pursuing careers in social justice.
  • This officer will, for their own events, liaise with the social media officer to plan advertising, arrange catering, speak to CAJ staff about room bookings, and be in touch with external partners.Ìý
  • Ideally plan 3-4 events per year.Ìý
Events Officer
  • Plans informative events, with the aim of teaching students about social-justice-related topics.Ìý
  • This officer will, for their own events, liaise with the social media officer to plan advertising, arrange catering, speak to CAJ Staff about room bookings, and be in touch with external partners.
  • Ideally plan 2-4 events per year.ÌýÌý
Fundraising Officer

  • Plans fundraising events of their choice to raise money for a chosen charity or UCL iLAC.Ìý
  • This officer will, for their own events, liaise with the social media officer to plan advertising, arrange catering, speak to the CAJ Staff about room bookings, and be in touch with external partners.
  • Ideally plan 2-3 events per year.Ìý
Social Media and Campaigns Officer

  • Officers will be responsible for choosing layouts and social media themes (in line with UCL visual identity rules).
  • Responsible for promoting SPBC’s events and activities on the various social media channels.
  • Responsible for maintaining and updating the UCL SPBC Instagram.
  • One officer takes responsibility for the LinkedIn, and the other takes responsibility for TikTok.
  • Both officers in charge of liaising with the UCL Law Society communications team.
  • Both officers in charge of contacting the LLM Distribution list, the LLB Newsletter, and the CAJ Newsletter to raise awareness of relevant events and opportunities.
Publications Officer

  • Responsible for managing the Access to Justice blog including commissioning and editing articles from students on a range of topics concerning access to justice and social justice issues.
  • In charge of writing about all SPBC events in the Access to Justice Blog.
  • In charge of management of the blog, proofreading/editing external submissions, and uploading blog submissions.Ìý
  • Responsible for overseeing members of the publications subcommittee to ensure they are creating and delivering appropriate contentÌýÌý
Publications SubcommitteeÌý
  • Responsible for writing regular articles for the Access to Justice blog including thought pieces and SPBC event write-upsÌýÌý

1st Year Representative

  • The 1st Year Representative is responsible for engaging with first-year students and encouraging their invovlement in pro bono. They will also organise meetings, take meeting minutes, and work with other committee members to provide support for activities and eventsÌý

LLM Engagement OfficerÌý

  • The LLM Engagement Officer will be responsible for increasing awareness of pro bono opportunities for LLM students as well as promoting engagement with Committee and CAJ events and activities.Ìý
  • The LLM Engagement Officer may also work with the LLB Engagement Officer to coordinate focus groups and design surveys to understand student needs around pro bono and evaluate the effectiveness of Committee activities.
