Dentists must consider special needs and cultural sensitivities

7 December 2006

Professor Crispian Scully, Dean and Director of Studies and Research at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute, has published a handbook explaining how pre-existing health conditions can affect dental treatment, his fifth book in 2006.

'Special Care in Dentistry'

'Special Care in Dentistry: Handbook of Oral Healthcare', published by Churchill Livingstone, provides details of the implications of how diseases and conditions can affect dental practice. These include psychiatric disorders, and special considerations for disabled and elderly patients. The title, in pocket-book format, aims to be an easily-accessible reference as the profession is increasingly recognising the special needs of patients, and the medico-legal implications of these. The book was co-written with Dr Pedro Diz Dios (Santiago de Compostela University, Spain) and Dr Navdeep Kumar, also of the UCL Eastman Dental Institute.

This follows the October release of 'Oral Medicine', also published by Churchill Livingstone, which Professor Scully co-wrote with Sergio Gandolfo and Marco Carozzo, both of the University of Turin, Italy. It is designed to help dental practitioners recognise the signs and symptoms of conditions affecting the soft tissues of the mouth, such as ulcers and oral cancer, as well as the oral effects of systemic diseases.

In May 2006, Quintessence Publishing launched 'Culturally Sensitive Oral Healthcare': a reference work to help dental professionals to take the beliefs of patients into account when deciding upon a course of treatment. The book, which was co-authored with Professor Nairn Wilson of King's College London, covers many aspects of culturally sensitive healthcare, outlines features of various religions and faiths, and discusses cultural groups.

Earlier this year, British Dental Association Books published 'Oral Medicine: Update for the Dental Practitioner', which Professor Scully wrote with Dr David Felix of the University of Glasgow. This title provides detail to help primary dental clinical teams caring for patients with oral complaints seen in general dental practice.

In addition, Professor Scully worked with Dr Jose Bagan of Valencia University on the Spanish-language handbook 'Medicina Y Patologia Oral' (published by Rothodomenech SL), which discusses oral medicine and pathology. 'Periodontology: oral medicine interactions', published by the Society of Oral Medicine, Istanbul, also appeared this year.
