Description

This module will provide a comprehensive, state-of-the-art overview and analysis of common dementia diseases and syndromes: their epidemiology, clinical and neuroanatomical signatures, clinical genetics and pathology, and algorithms for diagnosis and management.ÌýSessions will be led by senior cognitive neurologists and psychiatrists at the forefront of translational research in the target diseases.ÌýLectures will be supplemented by a variety of opportunities for integrative, practical and formative learning, most directly integrated with the module Practical Neuroscience of Dementia and including patient-based teaching in neuroradiology, neuropsychology and neuropathology.

Aims of the module:Ìý
-Understand the underlying abnormalities in dementia.
-To evaluate how patients can be assessed, and how they can be treated.

Intended learning outcomes of the module:Ìý
-To describe detailed knowledge of key molecular pathological, clinical, laboratory and neuroimaging features of major dementias and related cognitive disorders.
-To employ a scientifically informed approach to assessing the patient with cognitive impairment and demonstrate knowledge of diagnostic tools.
-To evaluate current and potential treatments for dementia, including the evidence base, pitfalls and neurobiological rationale
