Description

This module introduces students to their future role as pharmacists and the current and evolving pharmacy profession. To prepare students for roles as health care professionals, they need to understand the responsibilities they have towards their patients and other members of the healthcare team. The knowledge, skills and attitudes required for pharmacy practice are introduced and developed throughout the unit. Knowledge and skills obtained in the other year one units are applied here when discussing the use of medicines and pharmacy practice. In addition,Ìýthe year 1 Library SkillsÌýÌýtheme is housed in this module.

This module is split into the following main themes:
Introduction to dispensing, checking and professional skills in the dispensary.
Professionalism and professional leadership
Law and Ethics
Pharmacy and public health
Medicines Safety
Self - care and common conditions
Academic skills for pharmacy practice

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the module students will have achieved the following learning outcomes and will be able to:

Knowledge and Understanding

1. Define professionalism and identify appropriate behaviours for both pharmacists and pharmacy students

2. Describe the concept of safe and legal supply of medicines.

3. Describe the role of pharmacists in promoting health and the context in which this occurs.

Subject Specific / Professional Skills
1. Demonstrate safe dispensing and checking skills for simple prescriptions

2. Demonstrate appropriate communication skills with patients associated with simple prescriptions.

3. Demonstrate appropriate management of simple, minor ailments.

4. Demonstrate basis physical assessment skills on a patient e.g. taking a temperature and measuring pulse and respiration rate.

Transferable / Key Skills
1. Demonstrate an initial understanding of Continuing Professional Development.

2. Demonstrate information skills appropriate to the first year of study

3. Demonstrate numeracy skills appropriate to the first year of study.
