Description
Official data forms some of the key raw material for research in the Economics of Construction. The measurement, understanding and interpretation of the economic statistics of construction has been at the heart of the work of the Bartlett right from the work of Duccio Turin in the 1960’s which has been continued by Pat Hillebrandt and Graham Ive at 911 and inspired others elsewhere such as Ranko Bon at Reading. This module stands in that tradition. The module also relates to the concepts of sustainability and green buildings. Duccio Turin’s inaugural lecture in 1966 was entitled “What do we mean by building?” In addition to the work of contractors and sub-contractors, building construction activity is taken in its widest sense to include the design professions and the design and construction of physical infrastructure. Understanding i) the inter-relationship of construction with its consumers and suppliers, ii) the comparative measurement of construction activity and performance over time, place and sector, and iii) the measurement of the environmental impacts of construction industry, is an essential part of understanding its dynamic inter-relationship with both the local and the global economy.
