Description
This research module introduces students to methods of data visualisation within cities and the built environment, with a focus on 2D and 3D spatial visualisation using web-based technologies. The project is group-based, running as a series of workshops through term two, and group work in term three, culminating in a presentation of group outputs at the end of the final term. The module builds upon the taught sections of the course (CASA0005 Geographic Information Systems and CASA0013 Foundations of Spatial Data Science), creating connections between mapping, modelling, and visualisation, and giving the students an opportunity to create a powerful and coherent portfolio of visual content.
Module aims-
Learn to create visualizations from scratch; build confidence in understanding and manipulating spatial, attribute and spatio-temporal data.
Link GIS to programming and visualization techniques, particularly using web-based technologies.
Understand cartographic design principles; successfully apply appropriate visualisation methods for different data types and research questions.
Understand the advantages and design challenges of interactive visualisation methods; design relevant levels of user interaction for different applications and audiences.
Develop skills in communicating research outcomes using engaging and concise visualisation methods. Experiment with new research-led visualisation methods.
Provide students with a relevant intellectual toolkit for future research and professional development.
