Description

This course focuses on the interrelationships between work and family, with special attention given to gender as a significant factor affecting the nature of these relationships. Both paid and unpaid work and care are included for study. The course is international and comparative in perspective drawing in particular from Europe, Asia, and North America.Ìý It explores critical challenges of balancing responsibilities of paid work and family life, from the perspective of different stakeholders -women, men, children, and employers.Ìý Specific areas to be addressed include: theoretical perspectives on gender; work and family; gender variation in household divisions of care and labour; class & ethnic inequalities and reshaping of the economy; labour market and parental employment; fatherhood, motherhood and childrearing; Policies to support working parents: maternity and paternity leave and flexible work arrangements; work-place cultures. Gender and work utopias and dystopias.
