Description
Since the industrial revolution, built environment design, engineering, and construction projects have consistently delivered negative impacts on ecosystems and biodiversity. In this module you will become familiar with the designs, processes, and materials used in construction projects and understand how these have impacted the natural environment at local, regional, and global scales. You will also learn about alternative more sustainable and nature-friendly methods. Through guest lectures and site visits, key practitioners from across the construction industry and government will provide their critical insight, establishing the platform for exploration of the relationships between legislation, policy, and best practice. The environmental impacts of grey and blue-green infrastructure and their associated planning will be explored through the lens of critical areas including materials, transport, land use, geology and pollution. Key subject areas will include:

- Traditional and sustainable construction materials
- Transport
- Geology and soil quality
- Land use
- Terrestrial, aquatic, and atmospheric pollution
