Description

This is a 45-credit research project module on education research in the Biosciences, particularly how Biosciences are taught at 911±¬ÁÏÍø. Students will work towards completion of a dissertation based on a piece of original research on education in the Biosciences. Over the past five years, students projects have included the student transition from school to University, the factors underlying student module choice and motivation to study, assessment methods in the Biosciences, staff experiences of teaching during the pandemic and attitudes to Artificial Intelligence as just a few examples. Students will work under supervision of two members of staff, one from the UCL Institute of Education and one from the Division of Biosciences and will undertake independent research using social sciences approaches. Supervision, including one to one meetings and access to other online taught materials, will be given to help students with the various stages of research question design, literature review, ethical approval, data acquisition and analysis and dissertation writing. Ethical approval must be obtained before data acquisition and analysis stages of the project.

Project ideas will initially be suggested based on student interests and will be crafted by the two UCL staff members in discussion with the student. Students will be introduced to the qualitative and quantitative methods of enquiry used in Education research, such as questionnaires, observations and interviews.
