Description

This module explores management options for hearing loss, the role of outcome measures in the hearing clinic, and onward referral for implantable devices. You will learn about hearing aids and other technologies to improve hearing, and other management options for hearing loss. You will also learn about the role of the audiologist in helping people with hearing loss to choose the most appropriate options and how to modify a management plan if problems arise.

This module aims to provide the underpinning knowledge for diagnosis of hearing disorders, including:

  • Hearing care pathways and key points in the management process.
  • Amplification technology and related costs.
  • Communication strategies and techniques.
  • Rehabilitation groups for hearing loss.
  • Using and interpreting outcome measures.
  • The patient experience of aural rehabilitation and hearing loss management.
  • Involving communication partners in hearing loss management.
  • Identifying appropriate aural rehabilitation and management options.
  • Supporting choice of aural rehabilitation and hearing management options in the clinic.
  • Modifying management: troubleshooting.
  • Using, maintaining and updating amplification technology.
  • Supporting self-management in the hearing clinic.
  • Online resources for self-management.
  • Online technology in the hearing clinic.

On completion of this module you should be able to:

  1. Describe hearing care pathways in the UK in detail.
  2. Discuss the range of aural rehabilitation and management options for hearing loss in adults, and their benefits and limitations.
  3. Identify appropriate management options for a given set of circumstances.
  4. Discuss the use of outcome measures in the hearing rehabilitation clinic.
  5. Discuss self-management of hearing loss and how this can be facilitated in the hearing clinic.
