Community-based intervention to improve the well-being of left behind children in China

Project SummaryÌý

China is undergoing the largest migrant flow in world history, withÌýan estimated 220 million rural-urban migrants across the country.ÌýMany migrants are parents and an estimated 58 million children areÌý"left behind". Thirty million of these live with neither parent, mostlyÌýin the care of relatives.

An estimated 6 million are living alone orÌýwithout and care arrangements in place. Small studies are startingÌýto show that the resulting Ìýphysical and emotional neglect, and lackÌýof appropriate supervision, are associated with poor health andÌýpsychosocial outcomes and exposure to abuse. There are anÌýestimated 1.2 million left behind children (LBC) in Zhejiang ProvinceÌýand 600,000 in Guizhou. Ìý

The overall objective of this project is to improve the health,Ìýpsychosocial, behavioural Ìýand educational outcomes of children leftÌýbehind in rural areas by parents who have migrated to work in theÌýcities. The specific objective is to develop a sustainable andÌýreplicable community-based intervention, consisting of a networkÌýof "clubs" at village level, staffed by volunteers, who will provideÌýsupport for local children, including those left behind, through play,Ìýmentoring and help with homework. The clubs are establishedÌýunder the auspices of the Chinese Women's Federation.Ìý

Measures of health and well-being will be compared pre- and post-Ìýintervention, and intervention counties will be compared withÌýcontrols. In addition, the health and well-being of children whoÌýaccompany parents to urban areas will be measured.
