Spring into STEM 2.0: Making a difference through engineering

Spring into STEM is back! From November 2024 we're hosting another unmissable series of ground breaking lectures exploring hot topics in STEM, live at our UCL East campus!

From manufacturing to medicine, STEM (science technology, engineering and mathematics) is fundamental to understanding and exploring the world around us.

At 911±¬ÁÏÍø, our STEM research uncovers the complexities of how we live and how we shapeÌýwhat the future might look like.

Following the popularity of Spring into STEM over the past four years, this relaunch willÌýcontinue to bring ourÌýseries to live audiences at our UCL EastÌýCampus. Each evening ofÌýSpring Into STEM 2.0 will feature two TED-style talks by experts, offeringÌýinterdisciplinary perspectives on the hottest topics in STEM.ÌýOur academic hosts will highlight and share their cutting-edge knowledge in inspirational formats, perfect for inquisitive young minds and those interested in STEM research.

Whether you're a school teacher or supervisorÌýwanting to fan the flame of curiosity in your class or community group by booking them in, a young scientist aged 15 to 25 or a just science enthusiast on the hunt forÌýdeeper insight andÌýto share your passionÌýwith others, seize your chance and head to the booking form. Sessions take place once per month from November 2024 to July 2025Ìý—Ìýwe're looking forward to meeting you there!

Wednesday 11th November 2024 - All the small things: how is nano-research changing the way we see the world?Ìý

What ways can nano-research make a difference each day? How small does nano-research go?

Join us for the first of the 2024-25 Spring into STEM sessions to hear how UCL engineers are working with the very smallest of particles to make a big difference to people's everyday lives.

You'll hear talks from two specialists who take very different approaches to nano research: Adnan Mehonic, who applies nanoelectronics to Artificial Intelligence; and Morgan Barnes, how uses nanoparticles to develop smart materials.

How is research shaping the future of healthcare?

Engineers save lives, by transplanting transformative technologies into urgently needed clinical and healthcare applications. At this Spring into STEM session, you'll hear about how we're looking at day-to-day challenges that affect us, and working on research that shapes the future of healthcare.

You'll hear two talks from Rana Khalife, a specialist in stem cell and gene therapies; and Alissa Parmenter, who uses the latest advances in X-rays to investigate the structure and mechanics of the spine!

How can engineering research inform advances in public health?

In our fourth session of Spring into STEM 2024/25, we're continuing to explore how engineering and health intersect! This is a big priority for UCL researchers - in fact, Global Health and Human Wellbeing are two of UCL's 'Grand Challenges'Ìýthemes!ÌýÌý

You'll join two talks by Emma Hailwood, who is researching the link between fuel emissions and lung health; and Lucy Todd, whose research on biomedical scaffolding takes inspiration from nature.

What can we use to tackle the problems of waste? How is social media involved in the sale of drugs?

HereÌýat 911±¬ÁÏÍø Engineering, we are committed to teaching and research that changes the world. At this Spring into STEM session, we'll be exploring two very different angles to this challenge.

You'll hear talks from two experts from very different backgrounds, but with a shared commitment to transforming something harmful to people or the planet into something positive. Ashely Fuller will present her research on preventing the sale of drugs on social media; followed by Jack Jefferies, who looks at how enzymes can be also be used to deal with the global plastic problem.
