BSP PhD student wins Brian Large Bursary/Motability Foundation scholarship

BSP Postgraduate Research student, Craig Smith wins Brian Large Bursary/Motability Foundation scholarship.

PhD student, Craig Smith has become the first ever postgraduate research UCL student to be awarded a scholarship from both The Brian Large Bursary Fund and the Mobility Foundation under the supervision of at The Bartlett School of Planning.

Craig’s research follows the completion of his Masters in Transport and City Planning at The Bartlett, UCL in 2022. His dissertation, titled "Accessibility, Urban Design, and the Whole Journey Experience of Visually Impaired People in London," produced universal design principles aimed at improving travel for visually impaired individuals in the capital.

Building on this work, his doctoral research, "The Use of Augmented Reality in Mobile Navigation for the Visually Impaired," focuses on developing a mobile travel app that employs augmented reality to deliver location-based, specialised information for visually impaired users.

To develop the application, Craig will test prototypes at 911’s world-renowned facility under the guidance of as his subsidiary supervisor. PEARL is a unique space with an expert team that enables researchers to replicate real-world environments to study interactions under controlled conditions.

Craig said:

“I am happy to be able to continue my research with guidance and support from The Bartlett School of Planning, working towards my research aims to remove barriers to independent travel for the visually impaired and highlight the role of holistic urban planning in improving accessibility for all.”
