The short documentary film The Neighbours of Santa Olga is a research output from the academic project Understanding fire risk and disaster recovery in Chile through the eyes of the elderly, an international collaboration between DPU’s and Dr Felipe Rivera in partnership with Dr Magdalena Gil from and the School of Government at .

The documentary follows elderly survivors seven years after the 2017 fire disaster that completely burned down the city of Santa Olga in central Chile. The survivors share their perspectives on disaster recovery, the meaning of home and community, overcoming trauma, and becoming an example for other communities losing their homes due to fires and disaster risk.

The Neighbours of Santa Olga was made possible by funding from the UCL Global Engagement Funds, DPU Environmental justice, urbanisation and resilience research cluster and the DPU Training and Advisory Services fund. The screening, which was also conducted internationally with an online audience was followed by a question-and-answer session with the film's director, Amanda Rivera.

Dr Felipe Rivera, DPU Research Fellow and the film’s producer said:

“With this film, we aim to explore non-conventional disaster risk communication, making use of the power of audiovisual media and storytelling. Sharing survivors' testimonies, we see how recovery becomes essentially a shared experience, highlighting the importance of community to overcome trauma and rebuilding life after a disaster. Following the release, we are very excited to begin presenting our film to different audiences. Our participation in international festivals includes Awareness Film Festival (, Los Angeles, CA, October 2024) and the Urban Cinema Festival at the World Urban Forum WUF12 (, Cairo, November 2024)”.
